Xavier Massó Appointed as the New ICN2 Manager

by Chema Arcos

With his extensive experience in administration and research management, Massó’s leadership provides a great opportunity to continue working towards the centre's strategic objectives.

We are pleased to welcome Xavier Massó as the institution's new manager. He joins us after an extensive career in scientific and academic management, most recently as Deputy Director of Research at the Department of Research and Universities of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government).

His career has undoubtedly given him a broad understanding of the needs and challenges facing research institutions such as ICN2. His leadership will provide a valuable opportunity to reinforce ICN2's scientific and institutional strategies, as well as its international presence.

Xavier Massó is taking over from Lluís Bellafont. He has now retired, and we would like to express our gratitude and affection to Lluís for his 14 years of service to the institution.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Massó, and here are some of the highlights from our conversation:

What motivated you to take on this new professional challenge as the ICN2 manager?

Well, ICN2 is a leading centre for nanoscience and nanotechnology at both the national and international level. What attracted me most is its ability to combine scientific excellence with a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability.”

What values do you detect in ICN2? How would you define the values that characterise the institution?

I mean, I’ve just arrived, but from what I’ve seen so far, ICN2 has a strong institutional culture built on scientific excellence, with a particular focus on ethics and sustainability. There’s also a clear emphasis on fostering collaboration across disciplines and teams, and a strong commitment to equal opportunities, diversity, and talent development.”

Out of all the values you’ve mentioned, is there one in particular that you think defines ICN2?

Well, beyond its international scientific reputation, which in my opinion is already well established, ICN2 has an impressive ability to bridge knowledge with society, which is what we mean by innovation.”

We know a bit about your professional background and experience. What key lessons from your past roles can you bring to ICN2?

Well, in my previous roles, I’ve led structural transformation processes—driving more efficient management strategies, building strong multidisciplinary teams, and staying closely attuned to the needs of the scientific and research community. All this helped me develop both a strategic and hands-on perspective, which I’ll for sure be applying at ICN2.
