ICN2 Thesis Receives PhD Award in Materials Science from the Spanish Microscopy Society

by Chema Arcos

This recognition was awarded to Marc Botifoll, who completed his PhD within the ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group, during the international conference Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science 2025 (MFS25).

Dr Marc Botifoll, a former member of the ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group, received one of the Spanish Microscopy Society (SME) PhD Awards in Materials Science, sponsored by ThermoFisher, in recognition of the outstanding quality and impact of his doctoral research entitled: “End-to-End Automation in STEM Imaging and Spectroscopy: Revolutionising the Analysis of Quantum Materials and Beyond”. The award was presented on 26 September at the Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science 2025 (MFS25) international conference, which took place at the Prince Felipe Research Centre in Valencia, Spain.

This international meeting is a key forum for experts in microscopy materials and life sciences. It provides a platform for the exchange of ideas and the showcasing of the latest scientific breakthroughs in these fields.

Led by ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol, the Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group is dedicated to exploring nanomaterials through advanced electron microscopy, spectroscopy and structure–property studies. The group also integrates artificial intelligence methodologies for advanced data analysis and 3D atomic-scale modelling, contributing to applications in electronics, photonics, and quantum technologies.

We at ICN2 would like to warmly congratulate Dr Marc Botifoll and the entire Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group on this outstanding achievement, which highlights their excellence in research and their international recognition.
