The first ASEVA-Toyota Awards on science and technology of vacuum are announced

by Francisco Paños

ASEVA is the Spanish Association of Vacuum and its Applications. ICREA Prof. Aitor Mugarza, Group Leader of the ICN2 Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group, was part of the scientific committee that selected the winners.

ASEVA, the Spanish Association of Vacuum and its Applications, has announced the winners of the first National Awards on Science and Technology of Vacuum. The members of ASEVA, in collaboration with CSIC and Toyota, have prepared these prizes to make more visible the importance in our societies of knowledge and techniques related to vacuum.

The scientific committee (of which ICREA Prof. Aitor Mugarza, Group Leader of the ICN2 Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group, was part) decided the winners of the three categories that these awards recognise: Best “junior” scientist, All a devoted career and Improving our environment.

Dr Miguel Moreno Ugeda won the ‘Best “junior” scientist’ category, for his outstanding contribution to the scanning probe microscopy and the application of this technique to the study of two-dimensional materials. On the other hand, Prof. Salvador Ferrer Fábregas won the ‘All a devoted career’ award, which recognises his exceptional contributions to the study of surface properties and the development of experimental characterization techniques, and for his role in the creation and functioning of the ALBA Synchrotron. Finally, Dr Edgardo Saucedo received the ‘Improving our environment’ award for his contribution to fabricate new low-cost photovoltaic materials, avoiding critical chemical elements.

The awards ceremony will include a public debate between the awardees and different personalities from the cultural sphere, and will be held at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, on a date yet to be confirmed.
