Once again the Barcelona Science Fair brought together science lovers and scientists in a wonderful setting for family fun and discussion. The ICN2 joined the celebrations around the 100th anniversary of Richard Feynman’s birth, also presenting some of the highlights of its Severo Ochoa Programme.
ICN2 researchers and communication professionals played an active role in the Barcelona Science Fair. They shared some of highlights of the ICN2 Severo Ochoa Programme with a diverse and young audience. The many products it has brought to market and contributions to the energy sector, medicine and fundamental physics amazed and amused the families and science lovers who descended on the Parc de la Ciutadella over the weekend.
The events organised on Sunday 10 June by EspaiNano, an initiative coordinated by Jordi Díaz from the Nanometric Techniques Unit at the Universitat de Barcelona’s Scientific-Technical Services, brought together numerous institutions working at the nanoscale in a joint dissemination effort. All the activities included a reminder of how Professor Feynman was the first to suggest the potential of nanotechnology in his 1953 talk “There’s plenty of room at the bottom”.
“Surely you are joking, Mr. Feynman” is the title of one of the most entertaining books about the outstanding physicist and communicator Richard P. Feynman. It is also one of the catchphrases that visitors could choose from for the ICN2 photo call that allowed visitors have their photo taken with this genius that brought his own unique flavour to everything he got involved in.
The activities including ICN2 personnel were:
- A seminar by Prof. Mónica Lira-Cantú, leader of the ICN2 Nanostructured Materials for Photovoltaic Energy Group: "The challenge to find new planet-friendly energy sources".
- A talk by Marc Vila, doctoral student in the ICN2 Theoretical and Computational Nanoscience Group: "Nanotecnology in our everyday life: What is in it for us?"
- A talk by Daniel Rueda, doctoral student in the ICN2 Novel Energy-Oriented Materials Group: "Espai Nano with Feynman - Nanotalks".
- A series of activities co-led by Àlex Argemí, head of the ICN2 Marketing and Communication Department, and Jordi Díaz, coordinator of EspaiNano: “NanoChallenge”.
