i-Vision and InBrain projects hit the news after being granted by “la Caixa”

ICREA Prof. Jose Antonio Garrido, head of the ICN2 Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices Group, and Damià Viana, PhD student of the same Group, received a “la Caixa” Health Research Grant and a CaixaImpulse Grant, respectively. Both initiatives seek to develop new graphene-based neural interfaces for clinical applications and received broad media coverage in the context of the awards ceremony celebrated yesterday.

CaixaImpulse awards an ICN2 project on engineered graphene for neural interfaces

The selected InBrain Technologies project is led by Damià Viana, PhD student from the ICN2 Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices Group. CaixaImpulse is an acceleration programme that helps early stage biomedical research projects to validate their asset and define their valorisation plan. The programme aims to facilitate the leap from basic research to the market.

The graphene-based retinal implants to restore vision awarded a “la Caixa” Health Research Grant

“La Caixa” Foundation has announced today the winners of the second edition of “la Caixa” Health Research Grants. IFAE, ICFO, Barraquer Foundation and Institut de la Vision (University of Sorbonne) are the partner institutions forming the i-VISION research consortium led by the ICN2 and awarded with 1 million euros. The three-year project will design the next generation of retinal prostheses using graphene-based electrodes to provide artificial vision to patients blinded by retinal degeneration.

The Sabadell City Hall organaises every year a research and technology area during the city’s annual local festival. It is crowded with organisations sharing innovative projects. The ICN2 was sharing in one of the booths some general concepts about the nanoscale and some highlighted research lines, such as lab-on-a-chip technologies, brain-computer interfaces and superhydrophobic materials.

Official release of European Perovskite-PV White Paper

The European Perovskite Initiative (EPKI) has produced a white paper that encompasses the overall progression roadmap planned by the research community within Europe. It also expresses the need for further commitment and support from European organizations. The ICN2 is one of the partners of this young initiative aimed at raising awareness of perovskite-based photovoltaics and facilitating joint-research programs and synergies amongst its members.

The ICN2 receives its second Severo Ochoa Excellence Award

The ceremony celebrated at the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities was hosted by Minister Pedro Duque. The ICN2 Severo Ochoa Programme is a four year research strategy to strengthen the tools and the research performed in areas as relevant as energy, health, ICT and environment. A delegation of the 5 Severo Ochoa Excellence Centers and the 7 Maria de Maeztu Excellence Units participated in the event. The ICN2 delegation was led by ICREA Prof. Jose Antonio Garrido, Vice-Director of the ICN2.

Nanotechnologies for the clean energy revolution

The first Severo Ochoa Workshop on Energy Storage and Harvesting organized by the ICN2 took place at the Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona (CCCB) on July 12. Experts on clean energy technologies based on nanomaterials and nanodevices were invited to share the results of their research and to discuss the future of this field.

Iván Fernández Aguirre wins an INPhINIT ”la Caixa” doctoral fellowship

The winners of the “la Caixa” fellowshios were announced in a ceremony held on Friday 12 July at CosmoCaixa Barcelona. Iván Fernández Aguirre develops his PhD studies performing research on 2D new materials (as Graphene and Topological Insulators) at the ICN2 Physics and Engineering of Nanodevices Group, led by ICREA Prof. Sergio O. Valenzuela.

The ICN2 celebrates the first Severo Ochoa ICT Workshop: Lavoisier discussion on “Quantum Simulation”

The event, held on 8-9 May, is the first of a series of workshops offering an overview of the different research areas covered by the ICN2 Severo Ochoa Strategic Plan. It was focused on ultrafast dynamics and organised in collaboration with the European centre of excellence MaX, GRR-I Graphene&Co and GDR Graphene&Co. ICREA Prof. Stephan Roche, Group Leader of the ICN2 Theoretical and Computational Nanoscience Group, was the local coordinator of the event.

Tuneable reverse photochromes in the solid state

A new technique allows the design of solid materials that are coloured in the dark. ICN2 researchers from the Nanostructured Functional Materials Group, led by Dr Daniel Ruiz, have developed it in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry of the UAB. Their results, published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces with Dr Claudio Roscini as its last author, can have applications in rewritable displays or optical data storage systems.

Gold nanoparticles to facilitate in-situ detection of amplified DNA at room temperature

The proposed nanobiosensor developed by ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group led by ICREA Prof. Arben Merkoçi and Vetgenomics takes advantage of the high sensitivity achieved when using gold nanoparticles in the sensing surface. The sensor integrates DNA amplification and detection, which is of high interest for human, veterinarian and plant diagnostics. The results have been published in Analytical Chemistry.

Catechols play a key role in natural adhesion processes in wet conditions. Dr Javier Saiz-Poseu and Dr Daniel Ruiz-Molina have published a review in Angewandte Chemie that summarises the chemistry involved in natural and synthetic catechol-based adhesive materials and offers guidance for the development of new ones.

The CONCORD project aims to improve the immunotherapy of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia with gold nanoparticles

Selected by the European Commission through the EuroNanoMed programme, this project aims to improve CAR T cell therapy using messenger RNA (mRNA). Its aim is to make the therapeutic effect more sustained thanks to gold nanoparticles that will control the release of mRNAs. The project is coordinated by the ICN2 and has the experience of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona - IDIBAPS, IRCCS - Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche "Mario Negri" in Milan and Tel Aviv University in Tel Aviv.

Nanoporous graphene awarded third prize of La Vanguardia de la Ciencia award

Nanoporous graphene earned the third prize just after a test to predict response to immunotherapy drugs against cancer and a research on the origins of autism. ICREA Prof. Aitor Mugarza and Dr César Moreno, from the ICN2 Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group, led the research published in Science together with DIPC, CiQUS and other ICN2 researchers.

Heat transport measured on suspended single-layer graphene membranes

The ICN2 Phononic and Photonic Nanostructures Group has published a work in 2D Materials presenting heat transport measurements on suspended single-layer graphene membranes using high-resolution thermometry. The suggested approach, which overcomes major limitations of conventional experimental methods, was partially funded by the ICN2 Severo-Ochoa Mobility Program.
